Erickson, Willy Wonka and What to Do With Difficult Clients

with Luke Dixon

Think of someone who has touched your heart and inspired change within you. Be that person an actor, poet, teacher, healer, friend or even foe, these people capture your imagination and help you to see things in different ways. One such person who has inspired me in this way is Milton H Erickson MD. He confirmed to me that my natural tendencies to fiercely distrust doctrine, challenge the status quo, make mistakes and ultimately from those mistakes discover my own unique way of doing things were actually signs of creativity. These traits, that in the past had labeled me a ‘difficult’ client or student, turned out to be the perfect traits to endear me to the therapeutic skill of ‘Utilisation’.

Utilisation is one of Erickson’s great legacies and has been researched and expanded on by others such as Stephen Gilligan PhD. In this webinar we will explore how:

- Client’s persistent problems contain the ‘golden ticket’ to a positive solution

- Creatively adapting NLP techniques to the client’s map of the world can dissolve resistance, release the pressure we put on ourselves to find the ‘right’ technique and create effective and lasting results… seemingly by magic

Erickson was to therapy what Willy Wonka was to chocolate. As NLP practitioners we have the freedom to view clients and the change process as a ‘black and white six-step recipe’, or alternatively as a ‘world of pure imagination, complete with lickable wallpaper, orange men and everlasting gobstoppers’. Let’s journey down the chocolate river together…!
